To Pet Deer or Not To Pet Deer

Recommended Posts

I've always wanted to pet a deer. I always used to chase them around my hood, but they are wayyyy too fast and get away immediately. I recently took up the idea of googling it B) I found exactly how to do it...but at the same time, I've found some information implying it is not a good idea!

What do you think?

Tell me this isn't awesome? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY1Hlitx3Fo...PL&index=14

IT EVEN GOES IN THEIR HOUSE (not really but sort of): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8iXzlvaiGg...laynext_from=PL

Here's an article about why it may not be a good idea...

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/11/21/news/21iht-topics_44.html

With the advent of hunting season, wildlife specialists urge caution when approaching any wild animal, even a harmless-looking deer. One national study shows that deer cause more fatalities than bees, fire ants, even rattlesnakes, according to Steve Hall of the Texas wild game department.

"I suspect those figures include car wrecks caused by collisions with deer," Mr. Hall said. "But they include people getting gored, too."

Several years ago, a Caldwell, Texas, man picking up metal cans on the roadside was killed by a whitetail buck. Neighbors said the deer had become almost a local pet, but suddenly turned aggressive when the man rattled the cans. He suffered more than 70 puncture wounds.

Mr. Hall said: "When a deer loses that natural fear of humans, you've got potential problems."

A veteran big-game hunter, Cy Angelloz of Ingram, Texas, says, "If you bottle-feed an animal, it loses all fear of humans, but the pure instincts are still there. It's a ticking time bomb."

He says an aggressive buck attacks by boring in low, driving forward and lifting upward with its head, shoulders and antlers. If the victim is knocked off balance, the buck gives no quarter with its antlers and its razor-sharp hooves.

"The animal is either docile and passive," he said, "or it's trying to kill you. There's not much in the middle."

But tell me you wouldn't pet this: http://www.maniacworld.com/deer-vs-deer.jpg (jk about that pic lol)

In favor of petting the deer:

Whitetails are exquisite in their grace and beauty, and under special conditions, where their nature and needs are understood, they can be tamed and kept as pets. It is definitely not a commitment to be taken lightly though. It is important to realize that deer are prey > animals, while dogs and cats for example are predators . Deer are more like birds and horses who make their way in the world by being constantly alert and ready to take flight at the least whiff of danger. A prey animal will only turn to fight a predator as a last and most unwelcome choice. The prey animals that live the longest are the ones with the keenest senses, reflexes, wariness, brains and physical fitness.

My dream: to become Snow White!

Yea, but it's not all good and jolly

Tame bucks though, because they are tame, can be killers. In the wild a buck has an intense need to preserve its own flight distance, and would not think of coming close to a human, and that is exactly what gives us our protection. Once that need for distance is gone, the aggressive, rutting buck (even more so if a person happens to come between the buck and a doe he is courting) has no sense of needing to preserve its space, and that is when he becomes seriously dangerous.

^It's not that they are aggressive or not aggressive. But they are kind of stupid. Think about it...when a deer freaks out because of a car, it usually runs into the car...make sense, right? When a human scares a deer, it can run into the human or kick the human. Female deers are much less a danger, though they can still hurt with their hooves. I really think I'm going to do this. How exciting will that be? I'll film it and post it on youtube haha...if I'm successful!

My mom is against the idea because my area has really high limes disease rates...so I figure I'll wear gloves. I wonder what they feel like though.

Musa, I have nothing against you. But this is a very lame topic. Oh well, to each his or her own I guess. Happy deer petting..?

Sorry Musa but I am scared of animals.

Especially ones with fur, yes that includes cats, hamsters, rabbits and 75% of animal species you see on Discovery Chanel.

God made me this way T-T

I don't like them. But I'm not scared of it. I'd rather someone hand me a snake than a cat. Oh yes, I'm VERY cat-phobic.

I went camping last weekend and saw several deer. I could have walked up to them and observed their behavior, but didn't feel like it. They seem boring. Bears on the other hand ... aww yeah!

This is mildly insulting. I'll take it as a mistake, and assume you did not mean to write this blasphemy!

I petted (is this even the correct past tense for pet?) a deer at a zoo in Pakistan. Hmm never tried it in the wild.
