Understanding Poetry - 2

^ You got the plural right there, analysises. :P

I've never heard of her, but i'll google her and check out her work.

I've been doing some poetry work with my brother, and I came across On the Portrait of a Deaf man and I remembered studying it at college, and it always gets to me. He's so bitter throughout the poem because he lost is dead, he sees no point to life, and at the very end he criticizes God and shows his lack of faith in God and akhirah. He became increasingly agnostic towards the end of his life, it was one of the reasons his marriage broke down - it's just so sad that people never learn to deal with trials/tests in the right way. If the pen can liberate you, it can also act as a catalyst of your own oppression by your very own hands. I guess it's hard to be humble and to keep your ego down when you're 'on top of the world'. He was given the title of a Poet Laureate, he had a status in the world because of the talent that Allah tala blessed him with, but it's so sad when people have the intellect to achieve so much but they are so unfortunate that despite all their hardwork the reaped nothing, absolutely nothing in the end.

It's these two last lines that really get to me,

'You ask me to believe you

And I only see decay'

His inability to see past his pain and his trials, and the huge test of faith that is required of all of us to have sabr and trust in Allah tala in our most difficult times - it's a big thing, it's not easy at all. Maan, why are we so short sighted! It bugs me because we're all so prone to ending up in the same pit of hell as the people before us, what keeps us afloat? The same faith that at times, is so hard to hold on to, aiii yaiiii yaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

Thanks for the Blake poem- I never knew that a truth that's told with bad intent came from there... I always thought it was a proverb!

I like the way he says fiddlesticks to doubt. Need some of that and all.

A poem of iqbals:

'loves madness has departed: in

the muslims veins the blood runs thin;

ranks broken, hearts perplexd, prayers cold,

no feelings deeper than the skin

It makes me feel sad but not in a depressed way oddly. I can agree with it.

Sylvia plaths lines from 'mirror' I can't remember the lines but the impression stays with me:its to do with ageing and how the mirror tells the truth: ' day after day an old woman is rising towards the surface... Like a terrible fish.

*bumpity bump bump*

I recently read a ghazal by Ghalib and I really enjoyed it, if I post up the English translation it just sounds like a block of cheese, but honestly in Urdu it's so beautiful.

The translation is a bit off in some of the lines, meh - the underlined couplets are my favourite ones. Urdu is sucha beautiful language man.

ye na thee hamaree qismat ke wisaal-e-yaar hota

agar aur jeete rehte yahee intezaar hota

it was not in my fate to meet my lover

had I lived longer, this would still be my only desire

tere waade par jiye ham to ye jaan jhoot jaanaa

ke khushee se mar na jaate agar 'eitabaar hota

to live on your promise is to make my life a lie

would I not have died of happiness if i trusted it

teree naazukee se jaana ke bandha tha 'ehed_booda

kabhee too na tor sakta agar oostuwaar hota

from your frailty I learnt that the promise was delicate

it would not stand broken had you been determined

koee mere dil se pooche tere teer-e-neemkash ko

ye khalish kahaan se hotee jo jigar ke paar hota

someone ask me about your half-drawn arrow

would i even feel this pain if it had pierced my heart

ye kahaan ki dostee hai ke bane hain dost naaseh

koee chaarasaaz hota, koee ghamgusaar hota

what kind of friendship is this, that friends are now advisers

someone should ease my pain, someone sympathize with me

rag-e-sang se tapakta wo lahoo ki phir na thamta

jise gham samajh rahe ho, ye agar sharaar hota

from every nerve drips blood without restraint

as if that which you think is anguish is but a spark

gham agarche jaan_gulis hai, per kahaan bachain ke dil hai

gham-e-ishq gar na hota, gham-e-rozgaar hota

threatening as love is, there is no deliverance from the heart

if not the torment of love, it would be the torment of life

kahoon kis se main ke kya hai, shab-e-gham buree bala hai

mujhe kya bura tha marna agar ek baar hota

whom shall I narrate the pangs of these evenings of sorrow

i would have not resented this death, had it come only once

hue mar ke ham jo ruswa, hue kyon na gharq-e-dariya

na kabhee janaaza uthata, na kaheen mazaar hota

that I died and was disgraced, why was I not just drowned

never was there a funeral, no where was a tomb erected

usay kaun dekh sakta ke yagaana hai wo yaktaa

jo dooee ki boo bhee hotee to kaheen do chaar hota

who can see him since his Oneness is without peer

even the scent of his duality would be an introduction

ye masaail-e-tasawwuf, ye tera bayaan 'Ghalib'!

tujhe ham walee samajhate, jo na baada_khwaar hota

this mysticism, these statements of yours Ghalib

you would be a saint, if only you were not inebriated

I was reading another poem by Khalvati a few months back and there was a reference to Rumi. He wrote this about his close friend Shamsuddin (who used to write down many of Rumi's poems) and I remembered it cuz I once quoted this to my really good friend, only cuz we share a mutual love for shawarma and chips.

Why should I seek? I am the same as

He. His essence speaks through me.

I have been looking for myself.

Loneliness

A lonely twig

lying on an empty road

I split it in two

and placed the pieces side by side.

Prison

Man said:

Blessed are the birds in their cages

For they, at least, know the limits

Of their prisons.

Found these two poems in my collection from 2007.

And you pretend to not understand why people have the attitude they do towards you and your posts.

^ He knows nothing but tatti. It seems he has a degree in the tattti field. Who else could write so much except El presidente.

The king of tatti El presidente aka spud. In fact his name should be changed to TATTI KING

Bit harsh man.

If he misbehaves/acts out constantly why do you guys feel the need to give him attention? Ignore it and move on

If he doesn't get the attention/reaction he was looking for, eventually he'll give up. Kids do this alot, just have to be an adult about it.

He just doesn't seem to learn a lesson. In his talks every now and then there is a talk about poop. He just doesn't seem to stop.
