Fantasy Football

Recommended Posts

also, there is the analogy of horse racing. Would you go down to the horse track where you pick a horse (players) and risk your money on that, just to partake?

I am in a league with all Muslims and we are not playing for money, the problem is they don't take it very seriously, which doesn't make it very competitive. There does not seem to be any permissible way to join a competitive league.

Well, I'm not sure how Fantasy Football is organized, but would it be possible to play without buying in and without any money exchange? So your friends might be gambling, but you'd kind of be like the equivalent of drinking sprite at the bar [which is still questionable for many, but I think a different league]?

They are essentially the same thing, you're entering into a game of chance (yes, fantasy football is still chance based whether you like it or not there are odds). You admitted yourself that fantasy football is sports gambling when money is involved, so it does fit into what you originally asked.

The casino would still make money from losers. Besides, the hypothetical was to the individual case of you. Why can't you play the fantasy football league without putting money up? Let the others put money up themselves. You also imply roulette doesn't have strategy, when in fact, just like fantasy football, it is a game where there are odds and strategies deployed to minimise losses and maximise gains.

Either way look at the wider reason as to why this is problematic: 1) you're encouraging other people to partake in haram activity, other Muslims at that, 2) you're still gambling given the fact that if you win you get your money back, and to others their intention is to gamble with you, so there is a chance you will lose, i.e. you're putting money to chance.

You understand most of what I was saying, that's progress

I don't want an answer, so I don't know why I've convince myself to type this, but in my scenario I'm not risking my money, I'm giving it up without expecting/wanting a return. I would like to use my $20 to pay to join the league and play for fun. I understand what you're saying, and your answer will probably be the same, but idk if you fully understand my point

This would be a good idea, but my friends wouldn't be involved because I only have Muslim friends that don't gamble. So I would have to try to find someone online who needed an extra person to join that league and try to pitch him that idea. Worth a try, but unlikely they'll say yes

you could say the same about horse racing, blackjack, roulette, etc.

at the very least your $20 is going to encourage others gambling, at most you are gambling.

I don't think there's an issue with paying to play blackjack and not getting anything in return. And people are going to gamble no matter what I do. I understand maybe I shouldn't take part in it, but I don't feel like I'm their encouragement

You're money is part of the prize, therefore if they gamble to win, they are gambling to win your money.

Thats like buying alcohol for someone else. Would you do that and consider it okay?

Why are you guys still debating this? Kesaber seems to have accepted that it's probably not okay. Debating is best avoided anyway, so don't push it on for no reason.

I would make a purchase at Costco where they would take my money to buy alcohol to sell to others
